The driver of a school bus that crashed and sent several?Washington?Middle?School students to the hospital has been fired, officials said Monday.
According to Beal School Bus Company, the driver was distracted talking to students?when the accident happened. The driver told officials he saw other buses start to go but didn't notice the brake lights, rear-ending another bus in the parking lot of the middle school.
At least nine students were taken to a hospital, complaining of neck and back pain, as well as headaches, authorities said.
"It?is scary to think about. My son doesn't even want to ride the bus, and?I?worry. That's why?I?bring him to school and pick him up," said parent Rachel Martinez.
"I?guess he needed to be fired. He was distracted, easily distracted, talking to the students.?He should be focusing on driving out of the driveway," said parent Hope Gutierrez.
The driver has driven buses for Albuquerque Public Schools for 17 years, according to the company.
The?driver?of the other?bus had less than a year's experience and will not be disciplined, officials said.
The Beal bus company has been transporting?APS?students since the 1930s.
