?We aren?t daredevils?: Oklahoma?s storm chasers in the sky

MOORE, Okla.?As a helicopter pilot for Los Angeles?s KCAL-TV, Jim Gardner had flown over deadly mudslides and earthquakes, covered car chases and was shot at by snipers during the L.A. riots. Yet Gardner was best known for giving the world its first glimpse of O.J. Simpson?s infamous white Bronco leading police on a low-speed chase through West L.A. in 1994?coverage that earned him his first of several Emmys.

As a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, Jon Welsh?who has been on active duty for some five years?had flown in Iraq and worked as a flight instructor for the army, teaching soldiers how to fly in combat.

Both men are now part of a new frontier in the battle for viewers among local TV stations here: Flying news helicopters as close as possible to storms for at-home front row seats to tornadoes as they swirl to life.

While stations in other TV markets brag about illustrious new radars with technology that can pinpoint the exact block where a cloud is spitting rain, the weather wars in Oklahoma are a different beast. Virtually every resident in the state is an amateur meteorologist because of the propensity for storms here, and Oklahomans seem to demand more of its storm reporters. If Gardner and Welsh are any indication, they get it.

Both Oklahoma natives now living in their home state, each flew one of the two news helicopters in the air filming on Monday as one of the most dangerous tornadoes in the nation?s history carved a deadly path through several neighborhoods here, killing 24 and injuring more than 300.

For Welsh, who works for KFOR-TV, Monday was particularly emotional: He lives in Moore, and his wife and kids were at home, right in the path of the oncoming tornado. As he tracked the storm and gave on-air reports, he repeatedly texted his wife, making sure that she and the kids were taking cover. (They were safely in the storm cellar.) For several agonizing minutes, as he watched the tornado mow down subdivisions west of his home, he waited to hear if his family was okay?all the while trying to make sure he remained composed on air.

?I just tried to distance myself, report what I saw,? said Welsh. ?Something just kicked in. I guess it was military training.?

Gardner, 56, is the veteran storm chaser, and one of the first TV news pilots in the country to steer his helicopter close to the eye of a storm?though, as he?s careful to note, the camera zoom makes him appear closer to the drama than he actually is (he is usually about a mile from the actual center).

?After the riots, the floods, the fires, the O.J. Simpson chase and everything else, I was like, ?Man, I want to go back home where it?s a little quieter,?? Gardner, who works for CBS-affiliate KWTV, recalled in an interview with Yahoo News. He paused and let out a deep, hearty laugh. ?Yeah, that didn?t happen."

Gardner first worked for KFOR, the local NBC affiliate, before defecting to rival KWTV last year. When he returned to Oklahoma in 1996, he had never even seen a tornado?in spite of growing up here. When asked him if he would fly close to storms for live coverage, Gardner?whose pre-TV news gigs in L.A. included piloting celebrities like Brooke Shields and horror film guru John Carpenter around?shrugged it off.

?They said, ?Hey, you have a problem with weather? With tornadoes??? Gardner recalled. ?I said, ?Well, they don?t shoot at you like they do in L.A.? It sounded like a piece of cake to me.?

Gardner gradually flew closer and closer to storms as he tracked them across Oklahoma?coordinating with the station?s meteorologists about the best places to see the developing storm?and the best positions to stay out of harms way.

There are no textbooks for what he and Welsh do. It?s a matter of trial and error?based on their judgments as pilots, but also as video journalists who are not only there to capture the best images for viewers, but tell people at home in a coherent way what is happening.

If using a cell phone while driving is a distraction, imagine flying a helicopter on the outskirts of a violent storm, looking at camera footage and talking on live television about what you?re seeing at the same time.

?The military was perfect training for this,? said Welsh, 31. ?The way you have to be aware of your surroundings and careful of danger. ? But you also have to be calm and focused even in the middle of chaos or you are not effectively doing your job for the people at home.?

He added, ?It?s definitely an on-the-job learning experience, a lot of trial and error. As a pilot, you have to know how a storm is structured, where to go and where not to go. ? But at first you don?t know, okay, you need to be here to get the best light behind the tornado so it will show up on camera, or [this is] how to avoid getting caught up the wind or hail. ? But, believe me, you learn pretty quickly. With every storm you get more confident.?

In the early days, Gardner viewed his job the way most reporters do: He was there to break news before his competition. ?It was about ratings and getting there first and getting the tornado,? he said.

But that changed on May 3, 1999, when a massive F5 twister developed southwest of Moore and stayed on the ground for nearly 90 minutes as it tracked to the northeast, obliterating everything in its path.

Gardner stayed with the monster storm for its entire duration, watching in horror as it chewed up entire neighborhoods. His footage was not only beamed to viewers in the Oklahoma City area, but was picked up nationally by outlets including CNN?which went live with his terrifying shot of the deadly black cloud consuming entire blocks and Gardner?s voice calmly warning people in the path of the storm to take cover.

That storm ultimately killed 44 people and injured several hundred?but state officials said the death toll would have been worse had there not been warnings from Gardner and other local TV reporters.

?Looking at all the damage, I thought thousands of people were dead, just gone,? Gardner recalled. ?It killed 44 people, and that?s still too many, but I realized if we hadn?t been out there doing what we do, there?s no telling how many more people would have been lost.?

For Gardner, Monday?s tornado was a horrifying case of d?j? vu?especially as the storm took largely the same trajectory as the ?99 twister. Both he and Welsh steadied their copters about a mile away to the southeast and aimed north, watching the ominous cloud grew larger and larger.

?It looked like the same tornado to me, one of those storms where there?s just no way to survive if you are above ground,? Gardner said. ?You try to stay calm on air, but it?s hard because you just become so emotional thinking about all those people on the ground.?

Welsh, while dealing with his fears for his own family, circled his helicopter back to check on the neighborhoods that had already been hit and became choked up again as he saw kids running from the ruins of what had been the Plaza Elementary School.

?They were all covered in dirt and mud, and the place looks like a war zone,? Welsh said, speaking of a scene that, as someone who flew combat missions over Baghdad, he actually knows something about. ?You try to be as professional as you can, but at the end of the day, you?re still human.?

It?s a feeling Gardner knows all too well. Two years ago, he was covering a tornado just outside Goldsby in south central Oklahoma when he saw a family struggling to climb of the debris. Gardner views part of his job as being something of an aerial first responder, alerting local police and other officials to the people most in dire need of help.

But what he didn?t realize as he turned his copter around was that while the tornado had dissipated, its circulation was still there. For a moment, his helicopter was caught up in the wind and nearly plummeted to the ground, but he somehow recovered. It?s the closest he?s ever come to crashing.

?I think about that moment a lot,? Gardner said. ?But it?s hard for me to see people struggling, especially kids. It?s the hardest part of the job. You want to do something to help them, but in the air, you are somehow removed in a way.?

Both Welsh and Gardner admit that people have told them they are crazy to take the risks they do to cover storms. But both men say it?s worth it to them because they view it as a public service.

?People come up to me and say, ?Oh, you?re crazy.? I?ve been called it all, but when you see devastation like what happened Monday, and you realize that thousands of people could have been killed, you realize that what you are doing is helping people,? Gardner said. ?We aren?t daredevils. What we are doing is offering a helpful tool to the people of Oklahoma.?

Every year, Helotes hosts a large Cornyval Celebration.? The event originally started in 1966 as a celebration of the annual corn harvest.? After 47 years, the celebration has grown to a city-wide festival.? In conjunction with the festivities, Cornyval also hosts a 2 mile parade, with over 90 float/participant entries, through the historic downtown area.

On May 4^th, 2013, RE/MAX North-San Antonio participated in the parade, bringing the RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon Basket to the community.? Children and adults watched and cheered as balloon pilot, Steve Lombardi fired a burst of flames into the air.? Some patrons were caught off-guard, some clapped in delight and a few pets even hopped into their owner?s laps.? The balloon basket on the RE/MAX North-San Antonio float was a huge success.

The parade float was driven by Agent Don Crumrine who generously volunteers his time each year.? The expertise of the volunteering agents made the activity a very smooth.

?I love being in the parade and connecting with my past clients.? said Agent Tammy Cooper.? Cooper threw beaded necklaces, in the style of Mardi Gras, to the parade watchers. Beads and candy were a big hit.

?This was my first Cornyval,? said Jen Eskridge, Director of Marketing at RE/MAX North-San Antonio, ? I was impressed at how well it went together and what great weather we had for a nice stroll through the city.?

Google Starts Using Computer Vision To Let You Search Your Google+ Photos

Google almost completely revamped the Google+ photo experience last week, but somehow the company didn't get around to announce one of the coolest photo-related features in its repertoire: Google now uses computer vision and machine learning to let you search your photos for things like sunsets, food and flowers. I also tried terms like "cars," "beach" and "bikes" and Google consistently returned the right results. This search is build into Google+, but you can also use the regular Google search and use the query term [my photos of xyz] to find the right images.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Daniel Paille snapped a tie with 3:31 left in the third period, and the Boston Bruins put the New York Rangers on the brink of elimination with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night.

Boston leads the best-of-seven series 3-0 and can advance to the conference finals as early as Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Only three teams in NHL history have rallied from an 0-3 hole to advance.

The Bruins trailed 1-0 heading into the third, but defenseman Johnny Boychuk tied it at 3:10 of the period with his fourth of the playoffs. The Rangers hadn't lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4, 2010.

Boston thought it had grabbed the lead seconds before Paille actually scored when a shot deflected off the mask of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, popped up in the air and landed on the goal line. Lundqvist couldn't find it before Paille swooped in from behind the net and poked in the puck.

Taylor Pyatt had made it 1-0 in the second period for the Rangers, who were outscored 8-4 in two losses at Boston to begin the series. New York had won nine straight games at home, including three in the playoffs against Washington in the first round.

Lundqvist was sharp until the third period and finished with 32 saves. Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots in the win.

The Rangers again failed to get their power play untracked, failing in both of their chances and dropping to 0-for-10 in the series. New York has only two power-play goals in 38 opportunities during these playoffs.

Despite being outshot 14-5 in the second period, the Rangers carried a 1-0 lead into the third.

Boychuk was credited with the tying goal after the puck appeared to deflect into the net off Rangers defenseman John Moore.

The game turned rougher moments later when New York forward Chris Kreider was struck under his visor by the stick of Boston's Tyler Seguin, who was following through on a shot just inside the blue line. Seguin was then clipped in the exchange by the stick of Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger.

Shortly after, Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron had a cut over his eye that left his white jersey bloodstained. No penalties were called on any of the plays.

New York took just its second lead of the series 3:53 into the second period when Pyatt deflected in a shot by defenseman Ryan McDonagh that was fired from the blue line shortly after the Rangers' second failed power play of the night expired.

New York hasn't lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4, 2010, (86-0-6). The Rangers were 16-0 in those situations during this regular season.

Lundqvist was again the reason why.

He was especially sharp in the second, making a pad stop on Tyler Seguin 6 1-2 minutes in, stretching across to knock away a drive by rookie defenseman Torey Krug ? who scored in each of the first two games of the series ? and then bringing the crowd to its feet with a lunging glove snare of Gregory Campbell's slap shot from the left circle with 8:24 remaining.

That got the Bruins even in shots (15-15) before they outshot New York 8-1 the rest of the second.

The Rangers got off to a sluggish start after losing the opening faceoff, and didn't mount any kind of early surge fueled by the excited home crowd. New York didn't get possession of the puck in the first minute and didn't carry it into the Boston end until 1:35 had elapsed.

But the Rangers picked up their play soon after and built a 6-1 edge in shots, including scoring opportunities on Rask. New York earned the first power play of the night, however it was as ineffective as it has been throughout the postseason.

Rangers captain Ryan Callahan took what appeared to be an elbow from hulking Bruins captain Zdeno Chara when they came together along the boards deep in the Boston end. Callahan clipped Chara in the face with his stick, causing a cut on the bridge of the defenseman's nose.

The tide turned back to the Bruins' favor just before the midway point in the period, starting with a partial breakaway after New York turned over the puck at the Boston blue line. Chris Kelly raced ahead with the puck and was stopped in tight by Lundqvist when he tried a backhanded shot.

Shawn Thornton was also denied when he came in alone on Lundqvist with 8:46 left in the period, and Jaromir Jagr couldn't score, either, when he got a pair of whacks at the puck that the New York goalie turned aside.

The Bruins' surge gave them an 8-7 edge in shots, but Boston finished the period trailing 11-9.

UFC 161 gets new main event with Renan Barao injured

Rumors began to swirl on Friday that UFC men's bantamweight interim champion Renan Barao was injured and out of his UFC 161 main event bout against Eddie Wineland. The UFC confirmed the news today, and promoted Dan Henderson's bout with Rashad Evans to the main event.

Both fighters are former champions who are coming off losses. Evans, who was once the UFC light heavyweight champ, loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Jon Jones in his last two fights. One-time Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Henderson lost to Lyoto Machida at UFC 157. With their fight happening in just a few weeks, the bout will be three rounds instead of the usual five for main events.

Barao's injury means that both champions of the UFC's men's bantamweight division are now injured. Dominick Cruz hasn't fought since October of 2011 due to knee injuries. If Barao can't return soon, will there be an interim interim belt?

After Months Of Speculation, Microsoft Officially Reveals Skype For The Xbox One

Microsoft’s Don Mattrick pulled back the curtain on the Xbox One at a live event at the company’s Redmond campus, and it wasn’t long at all before the talk turned to software. One application in particular has been the subject of speculation for months, and SVP Yusuf Mehdi confirmed that Skype (which, if you recall, Microsoft acquired for $8.5 billion nearly two years ago) is part of the Xbox One experience. As you might imagine, the Xbox One Skype application allows users to participate in group video chats with their fellow users using the Kinect camera — so there are opportunities for a natural type of ongoing conversation, one that won’t require you to chat for 30 minutes and then disconnect. This could be an “always on” situation. You can answer a call by saying “Xbox, answer call” and then the video screen slides in from the right. Since the Xbox One aims to be your all-in-one “Home Entertainment System,” Skype is going to play a huge role in the overall experience. The demonstration showed a group Skype conversation happening while watching a video, with video quieting down a bit once the call is connected. Microsoft has always talked about being the hub of the living room, and it seems like the newly announced Xbox One is the device that brings its vision to reality. The game-changer with this Skype integration is that you can watch a television show or play a game while carrying on a conversation. This has been attempted, mostly as a “second screen experience,” but to make this a seamless reality is a huge step forward for Microsoft. Until now, you were constrained to the functionality of a particular game supporting voice chat, but this gives you a more personal experience no matter what you’re doing on your Xbox.

NASA's Next 3D Printing Frontier Is... Pizza?

Forget guns, here?s a 3D printing development that can?t be overhyped and pretty much anyone with the munchies can get behind. NASA?s sinking a chunk of change into 3D printing food?starting with the humble pizza?in a new project aimed at evolving the future of food for both space and back here on Earth. It?s not quite a replicator, but it?s a start.

The idea is that you wouldn?t cook your food in the normal manner; you?d simply print it out from the basic ingredients such as oils, water and carbohydrate powders. The cartridges would have shelf lives of decades apparently, so it?ll be a bit like a new version of canning, I guess. Sounds delicious.

Why is the project kicking off with pizza? Because of the multi-layered nature of the best fast food ever, which should be easier for the printer to produce as a first stab. Mind you, it should be able to spit out spaghetti pretty easily too, right?

I?m thinking this is likely to taste like stale cardboard, but hell, we?ve all had pizza that basically tasted like recycled paper at some point or other. Anyway, it?s the future of food apparently, until we get full-on replicators and can simply shout ?Tea, Earl Grey, Hot? that is. [Quartz via SlashGear]

Vudu Player update allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Coming months after the feature's introduction on Android and PCs, Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player "easier to use" and adding closed captions on iPhone. The Flixster app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with updated password info) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo is buying online blogging forum Tumblr for $1.1 billion as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to rejuvenate an Internet icon that had fallen behind the times.

The deal announced Monday represents Mayer's boldest move yet since she left Google 10 months ago to lead Yahoo's latest comeback attempt. It marks Yahoo's most expensive acquisition since the Sunnyvale, Calif., company bought online search engine Overture a decade ago for $1.3 billion in cash and stock.

Yahoo is paying all cash for Tumblr, dipping into some of its remaining stash from a $7.6 billion windfall reaped last year from selling about half of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Holdings Group. Taking over Tumblr will devour about one-fifth of the $5.4 billion in cash that Yahoo had in its accounts at the end of March.

Yahoo also says that "per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business" with David Karp staying on as CEO.

Tumblr, a service started six years by Karp, a high school dropout, now figures to play a pivotal role in Mayer's attempt to reshape Yahoo. To take on the challenge, Mayer ended a highly successful 13-year career at Google, which she helped surpass Yahoo as the Internet's most influential company. Since coming to Yahoo, Mayer has concentrated on improving employee morale, redesigning services and bringing in more engineering talent through a series of small acquisitions that have collectively cost less than $50 million.

Her efforts have been well-received on Wall Street so far, although most of the 69 percent surge in Yahoo's stock price under Mayer's leadership has been driven by the rising value of Yahoo's remaining 24 percent in Alibaba. When Alibaba goes public within the next few years, analysts have estimated Yahoo could collect another $10 billion to $20 billion by selling the rest of its Alibaba stock.

If this deal pays off the way Mayer envisions, Tumbler could help Yahoo finally get its stock price to $33. That would be a major coup because many investors soured on Yahoo after a previous regime led by co-founder Jerry Yang squandered an opportunity five years ago to sell the entire company to Microsoft for $33 per share. The stock spent more than four years trading below $20 before the recent surge that lifted the price to $26.52 through last week.

The deal could backfire though if Yahoo's effort to make more money alienate a Tumblr user base that so far has been subjected to hardly any advertising during the service's six-year history.

"Yahoo has to manage this acquisition in a way that keeps Tumblr's user base while trying to add advertising, which historically tends to turn off a lot of people," said Forrester Research analyst Zachary Reiss-Davis.

Mayer is betting that Tumblr will provide Yahoo with a captivating hook to reel in more traffic and advertisers on smartphones and tablet computers. That rapidly growing market is expected to become even more important during the next decade as people increasingly consume digital content on mobile devices instead of laptop and desktop machines.

Besides offering one of the top mobile apps, Tumblr also runs one of the world's busiest websites, featuring 75 million daily posts about everything from politics to pets. Advertising has been a missing ingredient so far as Tumblr, like many online services in their early stages, focused on building a loyal audience before turning its attention to making money.

Tumblr will remain based in New York and led by Karp, 26, who may now have a mentor in Mayer, 37. The startup has about 175 employees.

The deal also has some symbolic significance for Yahoo, an 18-year-old company that had spent much of the past decade aimlessly drifting under different management teams while Google Inc. overtook it in terms of size and influence. At the same time, newcomers such as Facebook Inc. and Twitter began to command the attention of people who found themselves spending less and less time on Yahoo.

Part of Yahoo's problems stemmed from missed chances to improve its service and technology.

Yahoo flirted with potential acquisitions of Google and Facebook in those two companies' early days, only to have the talks unravel because Yahoo wasn't prepared to pay asking prices that were far below the current market values of Google ($300 billion) and Facebook ($63 billion). Yahoo also considered buying YouTube in 2006, only to be outbid by Google, which snapped up the world's leading online service for $1.76 billion ? a price that now looks like a bargain.

Even when Yahoo did pull off deals, the company has been criticized for mismanaging a list of acquired services that includes photo-sharing Flickr, online help-wanted service HotJobs and content-sharing service Del.icio.us. Yahoo ended up selling HotJobs and Del.icio.us, but Mayer has been looking at ways to spruce up Flickr and blend its photos into more of Yahoo's other services. Mayer is expected to discuss more changes for Flickr at an event in New York Monday evening.

Tumblr could help Yahoo recapture some of its cachet with teens and adults in their early 20s, a demographic that has become tougher for Yahoo to reach in recent years as it fell behind the technological curve and struggled to develop compelling services.

While Facebook has turned into a mainstream social network where even grandparents now connect family and friends, Tumblr has become one of the places where the cool kids hang out.

Tumblr emerged has a trendy online hangout by providing a service that makes it easy to share blog posts, photos, video and other content in an enthralling mosaic. The service says it has amassed more than 50 billion posts from 108 million blogs. Tumblr users rely on a dashboard to pinpoint the kinds of blogs that they want to track and also have tools to pass along the posts that interest them.

That wealth of content could be interwoven into Yahoo's other services that provide coverage of general news, sports, finance and entertainment. Tumblr also will fill Yahoo's gaping void in the realm of social media. Yahoo so far has had to connect its services to Facebook and Twitter to give its users a social networking outlet.

Having its own social networking service will also give Yahoo more insights into the things that people like ? a key to distributing ads to consumers most likely to be interested in a specific products. That data, in turn, should help Yahoo sell more ads and accelerate its revenue growth. After three successive years of declines, Yahoo's revenue rose slightly last year, but lagged far behind the growth at Google and Facebook. Mayer has vowed to bring Yahoo's revenue growth back to at least the level of the overall Internet ad market.

Yahoo's acquisition will deliver a jackpot to Karp, who dropped out of high school to concentrate on computer programming. He ended up being home schooled while taking classes in Japanese and working on gambling software. Later, he became a product executive at a parenting website called UrbanBaby. After CNet bought the site in 2006, Karp set up his own a development service called "Davidville" before deciding to create an outlet for personal expression ? an endeavor that hatched Tumblr.

Karp's cut from the Yahoo deal is about $275 million. Most of the rest of the money will be paid to the venture capitalists that invested about $125 million into Tumblr. That list includes Spark Capital, Sequoia Capital, Greylock Partners, Union Square Ventures and Insight Venture Partners.

Nasty, home-wrecking 'crazy' ants even drive out fire ants in Southeast

Invasive fire ants have been a thorn in the sides of Southerners for years. But another invasive species, the so-called "crazy" ant ? which many describe as being worse ? has arrived and is displacing fire ants in several places.

"When you talk to folks who live in the invaded areas, they tell you they want their fire ants?back," said Edward LeBrun, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, in a statement from the school. "Fire ants are in many ways very polite. They live in your yard. They form mounds and stay there, and they only interact with you if you step on their mound."

Crazy ants, on the other hand, "go everywhere," invading homes and nesting in walls and crawlspaces, even damaging electrical equipment by swarming inside appliances. [Image Gallery: Ants of the World]

A study published in the April issue of the journal Biological Invasions found that in areas infested with crazy ants, few to no fire ants were present. Exactly how they are able to outcompete fire ants is so far unknown. In areas with crazy ants, the researchers also found greatly diminished numbers of native ant species, according to the study.

Fire ants are known for their painful stings and have spread through the Southeast since arriving from South America in the 1930s. Crazy ants were first discovered in Houston in 2002, and they have already spread to coastal areas from Texas to Florida, according to the researchers. Although the "crazies" don't have as painful a sting as fire ants, they multiply in even greater numbers. They are also difficult to control since they don't eat the same poison baits as fire ants do, the statement noted.

Last year, the crazy ant species was identified as Nylanderia fulva, which hails from northern Argentina and southern Brazil, according to a 2012 study in PLOS ONE. It's also known as the tawny crazy ant and was previously named the Rasberry crazy ant after the exterminator Tom Rasberry, who first discovered it. The "crazy" moniker comes from the ant's quick, seemingly random movements.

Luckily, the crazy ant doesn't spread as quickly as the fire ant, advancing only 650 feet (200 meters) per year on its own, the release noted. Therefore, it's vital that people don't accidentally transport the ant, the prime method by which it has spread, according to the release.

The IRS targeted tea party groups. Did liberal groups get better treatment?

Today marks the one-week anniversary of the Internal Revenue Service's disclosure that it improperly scrutinized certain conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. As an inspector general report on the practice found, groups with phrases like "tea party," "patriots" and "9/12 project" were targeted for the "Be On the Look Out" or "BOLO" list, and often ended up waiting two years for notice on their status.

Somewhat lost in the furor over the disclosure is that very few liberal organizations appear to have been approved either. There is no evidence that groups with words like "progressive" or "Democratic" were targeted. But the numbers do suggest that the universe of nonprofit political organizations is small, and that liberal groups were not approved in droves while conservative ones were subject to endless bureaucratic rigmarole.

The IRS publishes a master database of all tax-exempt organizations, so it's possible to see how many groups with these words in their names were approved each month. As the Washington Post demonstrated on Wednesday, there was not a single organization with "tea party" in the name approved in 2011. In 2012, 26 groups were approved.

According to the IRS database, there were 1,017 "social welfare organizations" approved for tax-exempt status in 2012. In IRS-speak, that's a 501c(4) organization of classification type 3. Donations to such groups are not tax-deductable, and they are often not required to disclose donors.

Of those, 28 have the words "tea party" or "patriots" in their name. Only seven have the word "progress": Louisiana Progress Action Fund Inc., Progress Missouri, Progress Texas, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, Progressive USA, Progressives United Inc., Progressnow. There are no matches for "liberal" or "Democrat." The complete list is at the end of this post.

Limiting the search to social welfare organizations is not the only way to compare liberal and conservative organizations. The Washington Post found that there were 30 groups with "progressive" in their name approved in 2012 by filtering all IRS records by the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities code, which classifies nonprofits into sectors like "civil rights, social action, advocacy" and "community improvement, capacity building," among many others. This is arguably a more comprehensive approach than limiting the data to 501(c)4(3) organizations, but it also is more likely to include groups that are not explicitly politically oriented.

Even by this more permissive metric, progressive organizations did not appear to receive special treatment compared to conservative ones, judging only by the numbers of organizations that were approved. That does not absolve the IRS from clearly inappropriate behavior. Nor does it suggest that the other side of the aisle had a massive advantage due to the violation.
