CUPERTINO -- Apple's (AAPL) "spaceship" campus in Cupertino could receive final approval by city officials before the end of November, and is slated to be completed in 2016, the city said Thursday.
The vast complex, whose signature main building is a circular structure dubbed the "spaceship," is headed for hearings, a recommendation by the planning commission and a final decision by the City Council starting in early October.
Cupertino-based Apple provided some updated plans about the campus in papers filed this week with city officials.
"This campus will be an icon, it will be one of the seven wonders of the tech world," said Rob Enderle, a San Jose-based technology analyst who heads Enderle Group.
The project also could become vital to Silicon Valley's image.
"It will be a huge advantage for Silicon Valley," Enderle said. "The campus will attract a lot of tourist traffic."
Apple's existing headquarters already entices some tourist visits, said Rick Kitson, a spokesman for Cupertino.
Cupertino's planning commission and City Council are scheduled to hold a joint study session Oct. 1 and the planning commission is due to make a recommendation about the project Oct. 2, Kitson said.
On Oct. 15, the full City Council is due to take an initial vote on the project, Kitson said. If the council approves the proposal at that point, the city's leaders will take a final vote in November.
Apple's signature main building would total about 2.8 million square feet -- which would exceed the size of any of the largest shopping centers in the Bay Area -- and would be four stories. It could accommodate up to 14,200 employees.
The updated proposal included details about the amenities inside the spaceship building.
Among those features: three restaurants, totaling 120,000 square feet, with the largest being 90,000 square feet; a corporate auditorium of 120,000 square feet; fitness centers totaling 90,000 square feet, including a corporate fitness center of 80,000 square feet.
The project also will include a workshop testing and data center totaling 100,000 square feet, the city documents show.
"There is no question that Apple's vision is leaving its mark on Cupertino, if the project is approved," Kitson said. "In many ways, the company and the town have grown up together."
