WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Friday that about 100 American troops have been deployed to the African nation of Niger. Two U.S. defense officials said the troops would be setting up a base for unarmed drones to conduct?surveillance.

Obama announced the deployment in a letter to Congress, saying that the forces ?will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the?region.?

The move marks a deepening of U.S. efforts to stem the spread of al-Qaida and its affiliates in the volatile region. It also underscores Obama?s desire to fight extremism without involving large numbers of U.S. ground?forces.

The drone base will allow the U.S. to give France more intelligence on the militants its forces have been fighting in Mali, which neighbors Niger. Over time, it could extend the reach not only of American intelligence-gathering but also U.S. special operations missions to strengthen Niger?s own security?forces.

One of the two U.S. defense officials who discussed the development confirmed the American troops would fly drones and other surveillance platforms from Niger military airstrips, tracking militant and refugee movement inside Mali and around the border. The U.S. will share that intelligence with Niger?s military, the official?said.

The drones at the Niger base will be unarmed and used for surveillance, not airstrikes. Still, the development of a base in Niger raises the possibility that it could eventually be used for launching?strikes.

Obama said in his letter to Congress that the U.S. forces have been deployed with the consent of Niger?s?government.

Last month, the U.S. and Niger signed a status-of-forces-agreement spelling out legal protections and obligations of American forces that might operate in Niger in the?future.

Africa is increasingly a focus of U.S. counterterrorism efforts, even as al-Qaida remains a threat in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Last month?s terrorist attack on a natural gas complex in Algeria, in which at least 37 hostages and 29 militants were killed, illustrated the threat posed by?extremists.

A number of al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist groups operate in Mali and elsewhere in the Sahara, including a group known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which originated in Algeria and is active in northern Mali. Last month, French forces intervened to stop the extremists? move toward Mali?s?capital.

Sony teases PlayStation 4 developer list, includes many of the majors (update: Blizzard and Bungie)

Sony teases PlayStation 4 developer list, includes many of the majors

Want to know just who's developing for the PlayStation 4? Sony just gave is a very good peek: it's promising worldwide support for the console, and quickly flashed just which companies that entails. The cursory look shows us many familiar heavyweights, such as 2K, Activision, Capcom, EA, Konami and Ubisoft. We've also spotted Rockstar, Square Enix and other names that most would have hoped for with the new PlayStation. Suffice it to say that Sony hasn't had any problems attracting the support it needs for a decent early lineup, although how we don't know how many of these developers will have something ready for launch day.

Update: A few exist that aren't (directly) mentioned in the graphic above: Blizzard is porting Diablo III to the PS4, and Bungie will put its future MMO-like shooter, Destiny, on the game machine.

Check out our liveblog of Sony's event to get the latest news as it happens!

(AP) ? You may not be a disease detective, but now you can play one at home.

The nation's public health agency has released a free app for the iPad called "Solve the Outbreak." It allows users to run through fictional outbreaks and make decisions: Do you quarantine the village? Talk to people who are sick?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the app was designed in-house and wouldn't give an estimate for development costs.

The agency says it is using social media to educate the public about diseases and to promote an appreciation for public health work. The app went live this week.

U.S. soccer player Robbie Rogers comes out as gay, Rancho Palos ...

MIAMI (Reuters) - United States international Robbie Rogers has come out as gay and says he is stepping away from soccer.

The 25-year-old, who recently played in England for Leeds United and Stevenage and has 18 caps for the U.S. team, wrote on his website - under the title "The Next Chapter" - that he had been afraid to raise the issue.

There are no openly gay players playing in Major League Soccer or in the English professional leagues.

"Secrets can cause so much internal damage. People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay," he wrote on Friday.

"For the past 25 years I have been afraid, afraid to show whom I really was because of fear. Fear that judgment and rejection would hold me back from my dreams and aspirations. Fear that my loved ones would be farthest from me if they knew my secret. Fear that my secret would get in the way of my dreams.

"Dreams of going to a World Cup, dreams of the Olympics, dreams of making my family proud. What would life be without these dreams? Could I live a life without them?"

Rogers made his name in MLS with Columbus Crew and was part of the U.S. team at the Beijing Olympics and narrowly missed out on a place in the U.S. World Cup squad in 2010.

"STEP AWAY"

The winger most recently played for the United States in 2011 but struggled following a move to English second tier club Leeds in January

2012, being loaned out to third tier Stevenage before being released by Leeds last month.

"I will never forget the friends I have made along the way and the friends that supported me once they knew my secret," he said.

"Now is my time to step away. It's time to discover myself away from football."

Many expected Rogers to return to Major League Soccer where his rights had been acquired by the Chicago Fire, although he had expressed unhappiness at the contractual situation in the North American league.

The Californian is residing in London where he has been undertaking an internship with the magazine Men's Health.

Rogers' statement was met with warm messages of solidarity from several leading U.S. soccer players on social media.

"100 percent love and support for one of my best friends Robbie Rogers. You will be missed on the pitch. Amazing talent, amazing person," said midfielder Sacha Kljestan, a U.S. team mate who plays in Belgium with Anderlecht.

Sports people who come out as gay are rare.

England's Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor told Britain's Sky Sports News that soccer would only start to win the battle against prejudice if gay players "ideally come out during their career even if it's towards the end of their career".

Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who also played in English club football, said he hoped to see Rogers back in the game.

"The bravery of Robbie Rogers is commendable, I hope he realizes that he doesn't need to retire. He will be more supported than he knows," Keller wrote on Twitter.
