Asia stocks rise, brush off slower China growth

Asian stock markets posted modest gains Monday, registering relief that a slowdown in China's economic growth wasn't as sharp as feared.

The world's second-largest economy grew 7.5 percent from a year earlier in the second quarter, slowing from the previous quarter's 7.7 percent, as weak trade and a clampdown on lending took their toll.

It was the second consecutive quarter of slowing growth but still strong enough to suggest China will meet Beijing's 7.5 percent growth target for this year.

A clampdown on overly fast growth in lending had contributed to jitters that China's growth might fall below 7 percent. That would hurt companies around the world that have become increasingly reliant on breakneck Chinese growth to boost earnings.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.4 percent at 21,369.00 and Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.3 percent to 4,985.90. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.3 percent 1,875.70. Japan's financial markets were closed for a public holiday.

Elsewhere, benchmarks in Singapore, Thailand and New Zealand rose while Indonesia and India fell.

The gains in Asia came after Wall Street eked out new highs.

After spending most of Friday flat or down, U.S. stocks rallied at the last minute and closed slightly higher, just enough to post record highs for the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500.

The gains were tiny. And the record doesn't mean much for investors, who hardly have any more money now than they did a day earlier. But it is a sign that investors believe the market's rally this year may not be over yet.

In energy trading, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 5 cents at $106 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $1.04 to $105.95 in New York on Friday, driven higher by continuing tensions in Egypt and a sharp drop in U.S. crude stockpiles.

The euro was little changed at $1.3068 from $1.3066 late Friday. The dollar rose to 99.24 yen from 99.14 yen.

Sanchez looking forward to Jets' QB competition

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:13 p.m. ET July 12, 2013

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) - If leadership counts for anything, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez might have a leg-up on teammate Geno Smith for the starting position.

Sanchez has been the engineer of Jets West Camp, a three-day get-together at his former high school for several of his teammates, which concludes Saturday.

The itinerary includes classroom work to study film and plays, as well as on-field passing drills.

The camp has given some of Sanchez's teammates a chance to see him in a somewhat new role.

"He's kind of an extension of the coaching staff," said tight end Konrad Reuland. "It shows that he's taking the initiative and you always want that out of a leader. When we have our meetings, he runs the meetings. I think that's important. I think guys respect the fact that he puts this on. He's done a good job with it."

For Sanchez, it's all about the competition and preparing for it. Being the star quarterback at Mission Viejo High School and USC helped him realize the importance of being prepared on the field, and building bonds off of it.

The camp's schedule included off-the-field activities that allowed the players to build a rapport and grow closer to each other. Thursday's extracurricular activity included go kart racing, while Friday's passing drills ended with a water-balloon toss.

"Any time you spend time away from the (Jets' training) facility to be out here with the guys is never a bad thing," Sanchez said. "Teams that are closer generally do pretty well. You just trust those players. You develop that rapport off the field."

This is the fourth year that Jets West Camp has been held. It is strictly voluntary and Sanchez doesn't worry about who attends and who doesn't. One noticeable no-show was Smith, who remained in Florida. He claimed that he wasn't aware of the camp. Sanchez said he invited everyone.

"I don't hold it against any of the guys that can't make it," he said. "I probably should have said that right away. There are no hard feelings about anything like that.

"Guys are on vacation and some guys are getting married. They're doing stuff. There are plenty of other things they could be doing. If they can make the sacrifice and be here, awesome. If they can't, totally fine."

Smith wasn't the only Jets quarterback to miss this week's trip to Orange County. Greg McElroy and Matt Simms were also no-shows. That prompted Sanchez to call on USC quarterbacks Max Wittek and Cody Kessler - the winners of the water-balloon contest - to help out when he needed a break.

Sanchez is aware that things haven't gone his or the Jets' way recently. He's not hiding from the mistakes he has made on or off the field. That includes a recent video on which he was caught exposing his bare backside while dancing with two women.

"The video is a little embarrassing but it's a good reminder that you're in the spotlight and you need to be ever-watchful and careful of who you're with and what you're doing," he said. "Whether it's harmless, whether you're in the privacy of your own setting, you feel like everything is fine and safe, you've just got to be careful. That's just a good example of that."

After last season's 8-8 record, the Jets brought in a new general manager in John Idzik and a new offensive coordinator in Marty Mornhinweg. Shortly thereafter, Idzik announced that there would be a competition for the team's quarterback spot.

"This is a league that changes very quickly," Sanchez said. "It's `What have you done for me lately?'

"(On) teams that don't make the playoffs a couple of years in a row, coaches get fired, players get traded, things change, organizations blow up and start over. We're with a new regime, John Idzik wants a quarterback competition. I'm still here, let's compete. That's all I can control. That's really what I'm focused on. I can't worry about anything in the past except getting better from it and moving on."

Sanchez is looking forward to the competition with Smith - and to retaining his starting spot.

"Any kind of competition is good," he added. "When it comes down to competition, I put my money on myself. I bet on myself and go play and go win the job."

He's not alone. Sanchez's teammates are equally as passionate about turning things around for the organization. They see Jets West Camp as a good place to start.

"This is great because I'm behind on offense," said tight end Kellen Winslow, who had 75 receptions in 2011 but played in only one game last season because of contractual issues. "I need to catch up. I'm just coming in trying to be a piece of the puzzle, trying to make plays for the team.

"In this league you've got to get better or you're just getting worse. It's all about repetition and getting better every day. I'm lucky to have job. I'm happy to be back."

Kevin Bacon Pays Wedding DJs To Not Play ?Footloose?

Kevin Bacon has revealed that he has an interesting method of avoiding embarrassment at weddings. The Hollywood star told Conan O?Brien he bribes wedding DJs to not play ?Footloose?, the theme from his 1984 hit film of the same name.

Kevin Bacon 2

Bacon finds it hard to avoid the role that shot him to fame but paying off DJs over the years has apparently helped. He also claimed that he does it for the sake of the newlyweds also. He told Conan ?I go to the disc jockey and hand him $20 and say, ?Please don?t play that song?. A wedding is really not about me, it?s about the bride and groom and it?s embarrassing.?

Kevin Bacon

Bacon also admitted when the song was played in the past, guests have expected an impromptu performance. He said ?It?s awful. Just awful. I try to avoid that if possible.?

Bacon is currently starring in Fox horror drama, The Following, which is set to return for its second series.

Srebrenica massacre anniversary marked by mass funeral (+video)

Srebrenica, Bosnia, was the site of a 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslim Bosniaks. Some 400 victims newly identified from mass graves were laid to rest Thursday.?

In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces rolled into the Bosniak-populated town of Srebrenica, beginning a campaign of ethnic killings unparalleled in Europe since the Nazi era. Pushing aside the lightly armed Dutch UN troops guarding the area, the army slaughtered more than 8,000 men and boys in just five days, dumping their bodies in a series of mass graves along the outskirts of the town.

Thursday, tens of thousands of Bosnians gathered in Srebrenica to mark the 18th anniversary of the massacre and individually re-bury 409 victims newly identified from those mass graves, continuing the plodding process of bringing closure to this dark chapter in Bosnian history. Meanwhile, on the same afternoon, one of the Bosnian Serb leaders accused of playing a pivotal role in the killings appeared before judges at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in The Hague.?

Among those buried in Srebrenica today were 43 teenage boys and a baby born during the massacre, their bodies laid to rest amidst the stark rows of white gravestones at the Potocari Memorial Center just outside the town.

Since Bosnia began using DNA testing to identify victims a decade ago, some 6,000 of the dead have been identified, reports the Associated Press. Another 2,306, however, remain officially missing.

Although the killing of Srebrenica?s predominantly?Muslim ethnic Bosniaks drew immediate international outrage, it took more than a month for reporters to reach the site of the murders and document the extent of the atrocities.

In August 1995, The Christian Science Monitor?s David Rohde was the first foreign journalist to report from Srebrenica, using forged press credentials to reach the town and reveal what he termed ?grim and convincing? physical evidence that a massacre had taken place there. He wrote:?

During a reporter's visit to the site this Wednesday, three areas of fresh digging were clearly visible. On the edge of the smallest of the three alleged mass graves, what appeared to be a human femur and tibia surrounded by bits of tattered fabric jutted from rich brown dirt....

Approximately a quarter mile from the three sites, Muslim prayer beads, clothing, and still legible receipts and election ballots from Srebrenica were found.

Two empty ammunition boxes, each of which appeared to hold several hundred rounds, were seen near the three sites. A handful of shell casings was found across the street from one of the sites, but few shell casings were found on the graves themselves. Truck and bulldozer tracks leading to the alleged graves were visible.

Over the next three months, Mr. Rohde?s reporting revealed the harrowing scope of the massacre, allegedly?authorized and carried out under the approval of President Slobodan Milosevic?s government in Belgrade. In October, he was searching for new evidence of mass graves in the area when a Bosnian Serb army official suddenly approached him. As the Monitor reported:?

The man pointing the rifle advanced slowly down a slope of stones. He kept his aim steady, holding the firearm on his hip, and paid no attention to David Rohde's entreaties.

"I'm lost, I'm lost, I'm sorry," yelled The Christian Science Monitor reporter, his hands in the air. This was a lie. Rohde knew exactly where he was, but he figured the truth - that he was an American journalist secretly searching for killing fields - would not be well received by his Bosnian Serb challenger. So he tried to look inoffensive, and made a move toward his rented Citroen.

It didn't work. The guard pulled the gun tight to his shoulder and sighted down the barrel. Rohde was deep inside territory he was not supposed to enter, carrying forged documents and suspicious maps, a camera filled with photos of a mass grave, and a borrowed coat on his back. A moment earlier he had been ready to photograph a human femur nearby. Now he did not know if he would live out the hour.

For the next ten days, Rohde bounced from prison cells to interrogation rooms as his family and a team of Monitor editors frantically negotiated for his release. Eventually pardoned by Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, Rohde?won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the massacres.

Since 1993, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has convicted 45 Serbs, 12 Croats, and 4 Bosniaks of participation in war crimes during the region?s conflict. Some 100,000 people died during the Bosnian War, a vicious conflict set off by the ethnic fracturing of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.?

As Bosnians gathered Thursday to mark the massacre?s anniversary, Mr. Karadzic?appeared before the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal?in The Hague, where judges announced that they were reinstating a genocide charge against him of which he had been acquitted last year, reports the Associated Press.

Drake City

The Army of Drake City

Image

The spear, the sword, and the shield have been the traditional weapons for defending Drake City for centuries. Fossilized dragon bone being melted down to form tough, sharp spearpoints, leaf-shaped swords, and nigh unbreakable armor and shields, the heavy infantry, called Drakons are among the most feared and respected fighting forces in the known world. Like the neighboring Arkham Legionaries, the Drakons are trained and drilled to fight in a phalanx in which the men and women fight side by side in a wall of sharp spears and shields. They are paid well and to be a Drakon is considered a huge honor, on par with knighthood or nobility. Wealth and title means nothing in the ranks of the Drakons. You either fight or you die for your city.

Upon King Moloch's ascension, he has been training them to fight in terrain that would make their phalanx formations difficult. Moloch knows that the moment a phalanx breaks, the men are vulnerable. Therefore, they must be trained either to hold onto it in even the most difficult circumstances or to adapt quickly to combat using the sword and shield. Moloch is also determined to ensure his men keep their cool even in the most desperate situations. Panicked or irrational soldiers are dead soldiers.

Image

Lightly armored in leather or chainmail, archers man the walls of Drake City or march and take position behind the lines of the drakon infantry. Their principle job is to defend the walls of the city, give fire support to the heavy infantry, and break up the lines of the enemy in order to make it easier for the Drakons to crush them. This role, however, can expand in King Moloch's view. Thus, he hired a group of specialists to reinforce his army and train his bowmen in their ways.

Image

Rangers are woodsmen who give allegiance to no monarch or society. They can act as mercenaries, bandits, or groups of warriors dedicated to keeping the woods safe. They supply their own armor and thus their armor varies from person to person. However, they are all clothed in green cloaks and masks to provide camouflage in the wild. Armed with longswords and bows, Rangers set up cunning traps such as pits covered with underbrush with stakes at the bottom and take the enemy by surprise. Their versatility is their strength, taking note of their surroundings and their enemies' weaknesses. They were more expensive than ordinary troops, but well worth the price.

The relationship between the Rangers and Drake City was volatile to say the least. Sometimes, they were hired by the Kings and Queens of Drake City, sometimes they were hired by their enemies, and sometimes, they raided trade caravans coming to the city. When Moloch came to the throne, he started a new relationship with them. He recognized their autonomy and and opened up trade with them. In time, thanks to some diplomatic maneuvering, Moloch had them agree to police the wilds within his territory. He placed their chief on an even level with Drake nobility and offered aid during hard winters. Since this understanding, the Rangers have policed the wilds faithfully and have cooperated with Drake City's authorities in enforcing the law side by side with Drakons. They have also been training the city's archers and have agreed to fight in any war Moloch finds himself in or wages.

Image

Once the sole privilege of the nobility of Drake City who did not desire to fight in the high-risk and undignified, in their view, phalanx of the Drakons, knighthood was expanded two hundred years to include anyone willing to pay for the training and swear loyalty to the King or Queen or one of the nobility. Knights are the ultimate shock cavalry of Drake City. Armed only with the best armor and weapons, even better than those of the drakons, the nobility and upper merchant class still make up the bulk of the knights of Drake City, though some commoners are able to become knights by pledging a percentage of loot from battle and waiving a percentage of the stipends they are entitled to as knight's to their lord in exchange for training and equipment. Their weapons include the lances, shield, and sword, but they may also employ maces, flails, axes, and other weapons they see fit.

Image

In addition to these, there are some magic-users which Drake City posseses, though these are few in comparison to the other units it is capable of fielding. Principally, they follow the gods KIel and Mardu in their mandate to gather knowledge and ability to commander the elements of nature. They are related in class to the priests and priestesses that honor the gods of Drake City, though they are not priests and priestesses themselves.

Let?s Call Bullshit on Jim Carrey?s Twitter Apology to Assault Rifle Owners

Trying to make sense of Jim Carrey?s Twitter feed is a rather exhausting enterprise to begin with; it?s an all but unreadable word salad of New Age platitudes, inscrutable emoticons, and the kind of insular navel-gazing that you can only get from someone who?s been bagging $20 mil a picture for the better part of two decades. And over the past year, he?s thrown gun control advocacy into the mix, with the kind of clueless, impractical advice (?Revise the second amendment?) that?s bound to send those who actually want to get something done on the issue into bouts of eye-rolling. He takes his role as the anti-Charlton Heston so seriously that last month, he made headlines for deciding not to promote Kick-Ass 2 because of the film?s violence. But yesterday, he apologized ? not for that move, of course, but for offending assault rifle owners. To repeat: he apologized for offending assault rifle owners.

There is some history here. Last July, shortly after the Aurora massacre, Carrey tweeted this:

And this:

As the debate heated up this spring following the Sandy Hook shootings, Carrey?s language got sharper:

The references to ?maniacs? and ?motherf%ckers? are, it seems to safe to say after a perusal of his feed (and sorry, a perusal is about the best I could do), what Carrey was referencing with his apology tweets yesterday.

Meanwhile, Carrey remains unchanged on his upcoming film. The last we heard about it was this:

So, to be clear: Carrey is bailing on a film hundreds of other people (and, presumably, he) worked hard on and he feels just fine about it ? but he can?t live with the fact that several months ago he called assault rifle owners ?maniacs? and ?motherf%ckers,? so they get an apology. We?re not talking about low-key gun owners here, people who hunt or keep a shotgun around for protection; these are assault rifle ?fans,? and Mr. Carrey is sorry if he offended them.

And here?s what?s bananas: assault rifle people are maniacs and motherfuckers! Carrey was right! And that doesn?t happen all that often ? after all, the guy?s a notorious anti-immunization activist, and in choosing not to help promote Kick-Ass 2, he?s seemingly aligning himself with the NRA and other pop culture-blaming gun nuts that he?s spent the past year deriding. Listen to Wayne LaPierre, and he?ll tell you that the best way to prevent another Sandy Hook (aside from arming teachers, obviously) is to place tighter restrictions on violent movies and video games, and loosening those on weapons. Or, put another way: they want to clamp down on fake guns and, as George Carlin memorably proclaimed, ?they?re gonna keep the fucking real ones!?

Carrey?s quivering-conscience removal from his Kick-Ass 2 promotional duties has smelled fishy from the beginning; such work is usually either part of an actor?s contracted responsibilities for a film, or presumed as an act of good faith. Kick-Ass comic writer Mark Millar offered up a thoughtful analysis of his own confusion over Carrey?s change of heart, and he makes some fine points. But what?s most noteworthy about Carrey?s decision to leave his movie out to dry is that he?s also turning down weeks of opportunities to talk about gun violence while promoting it. If he feels it?s an issue worth discussing (particularly if Millar?s comments about the nature of his character are correct), then he?s passing on a golden opportunity to do so ? while still, it seems safe to presume, cashing his paychecks from the project. If anyone deserves an apology from Carrey, it?s the people he worked with on that project, and not the gun nuts who?ve weirdly intimidated him into kissing and making up.

Egypt factions work on compromise on premier post

CAIRO (AP) ? Secular and liberal factions in Egypt's new leadership worked Sunday to reach a compromise with ultraconservative Islamists on a new prime minister, with a liberal economist emerging as a leading candidate for the post to run the country after the military's ouster of President Mohammed Morsi.

As the negotiations continued over the post, the shows of strength over the removal of Egypt's first freely elected president were far from ending, with hundreds of thousands in the streets Sunday from each side. The military deployed troops at key locations in Cairo and other cities amid fears of renewed violence.

The Muslim Brotherhood pushed ahead with its campaign of protests aimed at forcing Morsi's reinstatement, bringing out large crowds in new rallies. Its officials vowed the group would not be "terrorized" by arrests of their leaders and the shutdown of their media outlets.

The Brotherhood's opponents, in turn, called out large rallies in Tahrir Square and other squares in Cairo and several cities to defend against an Islamist counter-push. The rallies took on a sharply nationalist tone ? with effusive praise of the military and strong anti-American sentiment over perceived U.S. support for Morsi and his Brotherhood.

Military warplanes swooped over the crowd filling Tahrir, drawing a heart shape and an Egyptian flag in the sky with colored smoke. In the square, large banners read "Obama, hands off, a message to the USA. Obama supports the terrorists of 911" with a picture of Obama with an Islamists' beard.

The tone appeared aimed at drowning out cries from the Brotherhood and its Islamist allies that the army's toppling of Morsi was a coup against democracy. The anti-American slogans had a double-edged message: painting the Brotherhood as a tool of Washington and pushing back against U.S. concerns over the military's moves here.

Throughout Morsi's year in office, many of his opponents accused the United States of backing his administration. Washington often underlined that it was dealing with Morsi as the country's elected leader. Before the wave of anti-Morsi protests began on June 30, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson said in a speech that she was "deeply skeptical" protests would be fruitful and defended U.S. relations with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood as necessary because the group is part of the democratically elected Egyptian government.

Since Morsi's removal Wednesday, it has tread carefully, expressing concern without outright calling the army's move a coup or denouncing Morsi's ouster. On Saturday, the White House said in a statement that it rejects "false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt's transition should proceed," saying it is committed to Egyptians' aspirations for democracy.

"The West, the USA and Great Britain are hypocrites," said protester Magdi Iskandar, 59-year-businessman. "There is a big conspiracy against Egypt. They don't want us to have true democracy."

Many carried posters of the army's chief, Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

"Come out el-Sissi, and teach the Brotherhood a lesson," protesters chanted.

In the prime minister negotiations, 48-year-old liberal economist Ziad Bahaa-Eldin, a longtime critic of the Brotherhood and reform advocate, emerged as a leading candidate, a spokesman of the interim president told Egypt's ONTV.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Bahaa-Eldin confirmed his name was put forward, saying he "is still thinking about it."

His name emerged after a ultraconservate Salafi party blocked a move Saturday by liberal and secular factions to appoint the country's most prominent reform figure, Mohammed ElBaradei. Under the compromise, ElBaradei would be named vice president.

The negotiations reflected a central tension in the collection of groups that backed the military in its removal of Morsi. Most of those groups are liberal, secular, leftist or "revolutionary" and they are determined to get one of their own in the main leadership after a year of Islamist rule under Morsi.

But there is one major Islamist faction among their ranks ? the ultraconservative al-Nour Party, which broke with Morsi months ago.

ElBaradei is considered one of the inspirations of the revolutionary groups that led the 2011 uprising against autocrat Hosni Mubarak. But many Islamists distrust him, seeing him as too secular.

Liberal and secular factions were infuriated by al-Nour's rejection of ElBaradei. The youth activist group Tamarod accused it of "blackmail" and arm-twisting." But at the same time, they are eager to keep al-Nour on their side to show that Morsi's removal had support among at least some in the Islamist movement.

A senior official in the National Salvation Front, in which ElBaradei is a leader and Bahaa-Eldin is a member, said ElBaradei would accept the compromise if Bahaa-Eldin does as well, with the two seen as partners in a leadership team. During the transition, the prime minister will hold most governing powers, with the president a largely ceremonial post. A top judge, Adly Mansour, was sworn in last week as interim president.

The prime minister will also likely have strong influence on the process of writing a new constitution. That's a major concern of al-Nour, which pushed hard for the Islamic character of the charter pushed through under Morsi's administration, which was suspended after his ouster.

Walid el-Masry, of Tamarod, said al-Nour is using the ElBaradei issue to press liberals on the constitution, worried about changes to the Islamist-drafted charter.

"They are afraid about the articles that concern the state's Islamic identity," he said, adding that the liberals assured Salafis that they won't touch these articles.

The Islamists have denounced the removal of Morsi as an army coup against democracy. Their opponents have argued the president had squandered his electoral mandate and that the Brotherhood was putting Egypt on an undemocratic path.

Pro-Morsi rallies turned out in several places around the city Sunday, centered outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque where they have been holding a sit-in for more than a week.

In a Facebook posting Sunday, the Brotherhood's supreme leader Mohammed Badie said the "leaders of the unconstitutional coup continue flagrant violations against the Egyptian people."

Senior Brotherhood member Saad Emara said there was no possibility for any negotiations with the new leadership after "all betrayed us," and following the military's clampdown on the group.

"We are not regressing to a Mubarak era but to ... a totalitarian regime," he told The Associated Press. "Anything other than protest is suicide."

Morsi and five top Brotherhood figures are currently in detention, and around 200 others have arrest warrants out against them. The group's TV station and three other pro-Morsi Islamist stations were put off the air. Among those detained is Badie's deputy Khairat el-Shater, seen as the most powerful figure in the group and its main decision-maker.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Gehad el-Haddad, said the military is not giving any positive signals for the group to be willing to talk, pointing to the arrests of the leadership figures and shutdowns of media.

"They are trying to terrorize us," he said.

Outside Rabaa al-Adawiya, Brotherhood supporters waved flags as young men wearing makeshift helmets jogged in place and did calisthenics, as part of security teams the group says are to defend its rallies from attack.

"Do we not deserve democracy, aren't we worth anything?" said an emotional Alaa el-Saim, a retired army engineer in a broad-brimmed hat to protect from the sun. He pointed to the shooting by troops on Friday of pro-Morsi protesters. "It's the first time I've seen that, the army shoots at us with weapons they bought with the taxes I paid."

Khaled Galal, a young bearded man in a skull cap, called the army's actions the "rape of legitimacy."

"Muslims aren't allowed democracy, and when we pick up weapons to defend it we get called terrorists," he said.

Aaron Hernandez Will Not Appear in the "Madden NFL 25" or "NCAA Football 14" Video Games

Things just keep getting worse for Aaron Hernandez.

In a not-so-surprising move,?EA Sports just decided that, even though Hernandez hasn't been found guilty of, well, anything?yet, they are still going to remove him from both their Madden NFL 25 and NCAA Football 14 video games. Hernandez does appear on a reward card in the NCAA Football 14 game for the time being. But according to an EA Sports spokesman, his image will be wiped from the game completely in the coming weeks.

"Because NCAA Football 14 was finalized prior to our decision, Hernandez's image still appears in the Nike Skills Trainer," the spokesman said. "However, he is not in the game, and anyone who unlocks that particular Nike Skills Trainer reward will receive an Alex Smith Ultimate Team player item instead. The image of Hernandez will be removed via a Title Update in the near future."

Good riddance. Even though Hernandez is still innocent until proven guilty, it wouldn't have been a good idea to keep him in the game.

Carbon monoxide presents dangers while boating | The Salt Lake ...

Carson City, Nev. ? It?s colorless, odorless and deadly, and safety officials say carbon monoxide poisoning likely contributed to more drowning deaths over the past decades than imagined.

The hazard is not something people tend to think about when on a boat enjoying the sunshine and great outdoors. But the dangers are real.

"It?s a problem people don?t recognize," Edwin Lyngar, a boating safety educator with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, said Friday. "People will start feeling nauseous and think they?re sea sick when they actually have mild carbon monoxide poisoning."

Last weekend, 22-year-old Lucas Allyn died after boating at Bear Lake in Utah when he was overcome by carbon monoxide. According to the Deseret News, Allyn spent a good part of the day at the rear of a boat ? near its exhaust ? hoisting skiers and swimmers out of the water.

"It happened in the open air. You would think it unbelievable until you think about how the gases recirculate near the back of the boat," Dr. Robert Baron, a medical adviser for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, told the newspaper.

On Sunday, 12 people were treated in southern Nevada after being sickened while house boating on Lake Mead. Five were flown to a hospital in Las Vegas, four were taken by ambulance and three others were treated at the scene. All have since recovered.

"They were running their generator to keep the air conditioning going," said Christie Vanover, spokeswoman for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. She said another boat parked next to it, causing the exhaust to circulate back into the house boat.

Lyngar said carbon monoxide poisoning while boating "is far more common than we thought."

He pointed to the ban on "teak surfing," where people hold onto a swim platform at the back of a boat and are pulled through the water. Platforms are near exhaust systems.

"People used to do that for fun," he said. "There were several fatalities nationwide." It is now illegal in many states.

story continues below

Lyngar recalled another incident several years ago on Lake Powell, a reservoir on the Colorado River along the Utah-Arizona line. A girl died after washing her hair using the exhaust port from a generator.

"That exhaust is filled with carbon monoxide, but that spout also has warm water," Lyngar said.

Lyngar said a regional group that has studied deaths on the Colorado River concluded that carbon monoxide poisoning "was more prevalent than we thought."

"Going over the record of old accidents, we think a lot more of these are carbon monoxide-related," he said.

"I would say 10, 20 years ago we did not look at this as seriously as we do now," he said. "Over the last decade or two, we?ve recognized how serious it can be."

Baron, who has reviewed death and illness reports on Lake Powell for more than 25 years, agreed.

He and others have collected data showing more than 800 incidents of death or illness on U.S. waterways attributed to carbon monoxide since the mid-1990s.

"There is absolutely many more than that number," he told The Deseret News. "It?s still an under-recognized event."

Lyngar said it?s a good idea for boaters to have carbon monoxide detectors on board ? and pay attention to them. Also, people should not linger in the back of a boat near exhaust.

Pictures are Now Even More Important to Small Business Web ...

In a previous post I talked about how Google Carousel is making it vitally important to add really good pictures to your Google Local listing and your website. A recent post by Linda Buquet has given me another reason to make it clear that photographs are vital to small business marketing.

Now it?s gone beyond adding great content to your blog and social media sites. And its gone beyond prepping for Carousel.

Even those businesses which are not currently involved in Carousel will need to take note of Google Local?s latest change, which places Google+ Local Business images on the Local Search Engine Results Page.

As with Google Authorship, these results make your business far more clickable. Observe how the photo makes the result ?pop? right off the page. This is the same example and screen shot that Linda used in her post.

photos-search-results

There are a couple of speculations about how and why this is happening.

At least one of my tests showed me what appeared to be a clear case of a Google Authorship photo appearing on the local search results. Yet the photos Linda found appeared to have populated from the businesses? Google+ Business page. It could also be that these companies are using Google Publisher, which is similar to Google Authorship and which I?ll take the time to cover next week.

But the takeaway here is that you need to have Google Authorship set up, you need to have good photos on your business profile, and you need to maximize any and all chances for these photographs to pop up wherever people might see them. It?s clear to me that Google is trying very hard to create a web that is far less anonymous and far more visual, and as a business owner you need to be on top of that trend.

Bernie Nolan, 52, lead singer of The Nolans and star of Brookside, dies of cancer

The former lead singer of The Nolans, a 1980s girl group best known for hits "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" and "Don't Make Waves", has died of breast cancer aged 52.

Bernie Nolan, a singer and actress, died today, her publicist confirmed.

The singer was first diagnosed with cancer in 2010, but was given the all-clear after chemotherapy and a mastectomy in 2012.

But last year it was discovered that the cancer had spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones.

A spokeswoman for the family said: "Bernie passed away peacefully this morning with all of her family around her. The entire family are devastated to have lost beloved Bernie, a wonderful wife, adoring mother and loving sister; she is irreplaceable.

"They kindly ask people to respect their privacy at this difficult time."

Born on 17 October 1960, Bernie grew up in Ireland and made her name performing with the original line-up of girl group The Nolans (formerly known as the Nolan Sisters), alongside her sisters Maureen, Linda, Coleen, Anne, Denise and Amy.

After leaving the group in 1994 Bernie forged a successful career as a television actress becoming best known for her roles in ITV1 police drama The Bill and Channel 4 soap Brookside. She also had success on the West End stage performing Blood Brothers, Flashdance and Chicago.

The Nolans briefly reformed in 2009 with Bernie joining Coleen, Linda and Maureen for a one-off UK and Ireland tour.

The Nolan sisters' father Tommy died of liver cancer in 1998. Anne Nolan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, as was Linda in 2006.

Bernie was an active campaigner for cancer charities including Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

She leaves husband Steven Doneathy and one daughter Erin.

Twitter has been awash with tribute to Bernie since news of her death broke.

ITV presenter Phillip Schofield wrote: "Just heard the very sad news that gorgeous, courageous and inspirational Bernie Nolan has died. Big love to @NolanColeen & all the family x"

Music writer Peter Paphides tweeted: "Poor Bernie Nolan. Wonderfully expressive voice. Don't Make Waves always made me a bit something-in-my-eye-y. #bernienolanrip"

Sherrie Hewson, who works with Bernie's sister Coleen on Loose Women, tweeted: "RIP the wonderfully talented Bernie Nolan. A beautiful person that brightened up this sometimes dark world of ours! Sing forever Bernie."

Presenter Lorraine Kelly also paid tribute, tweeting: "Bernie Nolan was a very special woman. Brave, funny and hugely talented. She will be sorely missed. Thoughts with her family and friends."

FCC set to approve Softbank's Sprint and Clearwire deals, says Bloomberg

It looks as if nine months of hard politicking is coming to an end, now that the FCC has reportedly rubber-stamped the deal to tie up Softbank with Sprint and Clearwire. Bloomberg's cabal of insiders have said that two out of three commissioners have voted to support the transactions, meaning that Dan Hesse and Masayoshi Son should soon start cracking open the champagne and cigars. Now that the pair have charmed shareholders, convinced the Justice Department and bloodied Joseph Clayton's nose, all that's left to do is tell John J Legere that his services are no longer needed.

Apple Hired the CEO of Yves Saint Laurent to Work On Special Projects

Apple Hired the CEO of Yves Saint Laurent to Work On Special Projects

For some reason, Apple has hired the CEO of fashion house Yves Saint Laurent Paul Deneve to work on 'special projects'. He'll report directly to Tim Cook and presumably help out on future wearable technology that Apple has in store or outfit Jony Ive with tighter fitting t-shirts or something we have no idea what. Probably something we have no idea what.

Earlier reports had speculated that Deneve would be in charge of Apple Retail (which is in need of a boss), that doesn't appear to be true. Special projects, whatever that means, is it![Bloomberg]

Children with delayed motor skills struggle more socially

CORVALLIS, Ore. Studies have shown that children with autism often struggle socially and now new research suggests that a corresponding lack of motor skills including catching and throwing may further contribute to that social awkwardness.

The findings, published in the July issue of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, add to the growing body of research highlighting the link between autism and motor skill deficits.

Lead author Megan MacDonald is an assistant professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She is an expert on the movement skills of children with autism spectrum disorder.

In the study, researchers looked a group of young people ages 6 to 15 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. All 35 of the students were considered high-functioning and attended typical classrooms. The researchers looked at two types of motor skills "object-control" motor skills, which involve more precise action such as catching or throwing and "locomotion" skills, such as running or walking. Students who struggled with object-control motor skills were more likely to have more severe social and communication skills than those who tested higher on the motor skills test.

"So much of the focus on autism has been on developing social skills, and that is very crucial," MacDonald said. "Yet we also know there is a link between motor skills and autism, and how deficits in these physical skills play into this larger picture is not clearly understood."

Developing motor skills can be crucial for children because students often "mask" their inability to participate in basic physical activities. A student with autism may not be participating on the playground because of a lack of social skills, but the child may also be unsure of his or her physical ability to play in these activities.

"Something which seems as simple as learning to ride a bike can be crucial for a child with autism," MacDonald said. "Being able to ride a bike means more independence and autonomy. They can ride to the corner store or ride to a friend's house. Those kind of small victories are huge."

She said the ability to run, jump, throw and catch isn't just for athletic kids physical activity is linked not only to health, but to social skills and mental well-being.

"I often show people photos of what I like to do in my spare time canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, and then point out that these require relatively proficient motor skills," she said. "But that is not why I do those things. I'm doing it because I'm with my friends and having fun."

MacDonald said the positive news for parents and educators is that motor skills can be taught.

"We have programs and interventions that we know work, and have measurable impact on motor skill development," MacDonald said. "We need to make sure we identify the issue and get a child help as early as possible."
