Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey may have found the solution to the interruption-heavy life of a C-suite executive: He themes his days.
If he didn?t, he might find it impossible to do his job. Or, rather, jobs. Dorsey serves as chairman of Twitter and CEO of payments platform Square. On an average day, he?ll put in eight hours at Twitter, then another eight at Square.
He didn?t set out to be at the helm of two fast-growing tech companies. After co-founding the microblogging site Twitter, he was forced out after a management clash. Next, he rolled out Square, a mobile payments service for small businesses. But in 2011, Twitter asked him to come back, as the other co-founders made their exit, and Dorsey found himself juggling two highly demanding jobs.
?The only way to do this is to be very disciplined,? Dorsey says. So each 16-hour day, he gives full attention to one aspect of corporate development. As for the rest? He defers the topic until another day.
Here?s what his week looks like:
- Monday: management meetings and ?running the company? work
- Tuesday: product development
- Wednesday: marketing, communications and growth
- Thursday: developers and partnerships
- Friday: company and culture.
Saturdays are for hikes, and Sundays are for ?reflection, feedback and strategy.?
?There?s interruptions all the time, but I can quickly deal with an interruption and know ?It?s Tuesday, I have product meetings, I have to focus on product stuff,?? he says. ?It sets a good cadence for the company.?
