(AP) ? A former Mr. Universe who has just turned 100 said Sunday that happiness and a life without tensions are the key to his longevity.

Manohar Aich, who is 4 foot 11 inches (150 centimeters) tall, overcame many hurdles, including grinding poverty and a stint in prison, to achieve body building glory.

His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered Sunday in the eastern city of Kolkata to celebrate his birthday the day before.

Hindu priests chanted prayers while a feast was laid out to honor Aich, winner of the 1952 Mr. Universe body building title.

Rippling his muscles and flashing a toothless grin, Aich says his ability to take his troubles lightly and remain happy during difficult times are the secrets to his long life.

That, and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish have kept him healthy.

He does not smoke and has never touched alcohol, he said.

"I never allow any sort of tension to grip me. I had to struggle to earn money since my young days, but whatever the situation, I remained happy," Aich said, sitting in a room decorated with posters and pictures of his many bodybuilding triumphs.

Aich, who was born in the small town of Comilla in Bengal, was a puny youngster. But he was attracted to exercising and building his muscles when as a schoolboy he saw a group of wrestlers in action.

In 1942, he joined the Royal Air Force under India's British colonial rulers and it was there that he began his relentless pursuit of body building.

Encouraged by a British officer named Reub Martin, who introduced him to weight training, Aich earned praise for his physique from his peers in the air force.

Some years later, however, he was thrown into prison when he protested against colonial oppression.

"It was in the jail that I began weight training seriously. This helped me prepare myself for the world championship," said Aich.

"In jail I used to practice on my own, without any equipment, sometimes for 12 hours in a day," he recalled.

The jail authorities were impressed with his perseverance and he was given a special diet to help build his stamina.

India's independence in 1947 led to Aich's release from jail. Dogged by poverty, Aich and his wife struggled to put their four children through school. There was little cash to indulge his passion for body building, but Aich took up odd jobs to earn a little on the side.

His 1950 win of a "Mr. Hercules" contest spurred him to set his sights on the Mr. Universe tournament in London.

In 1951, Aich came second in the contest, and stayed on in London to prepare for another shot at the title. He returned to India after winning the title in 1952.

What followed were a host of awards, including top positions in the Asian Body building Championships. Over the years, he also earned the more popular title of "Pocket Hercules" due to his 4 foot, 11 inch-frame.

Six decades later, Aich helps his sons run a gym and fitness center and spends his days guiding juvenile hopefuls to reach the heights of body building.

A minor stroke last year robbed him of the ability to lift weights, but he keeps a watchful eye on young body builders training in his gym.

Although his two sons did not take up body building, Aich says his mentoring has earned him rewards. It has produced India's eight-time national champion, Satya Paul. Another protege, Premchand Dogra, snagged the Mr. Universe title in 1988.

Among his regrets, says Aich, is that he never had a chance to meet his more famous counterpart, a fellow Mr. Universe winner, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But Aich says he's seen many of Schwarzenegger's action films.

"I like the incredible stunts he does in the movies," Aich said.

Tunisian protesters demand Islamic state

TUNIS (Reuters) - Thousands of Tunisians rallied outside parliament on Friday, demanding an Islamic state ruled by religious law in a country long considered one of the Arab world's most secular.

Carrying black and white flags inscribed with Islamic verses, protesters demanded that sharia, or Islamic law, be the basis of a new constitution that parliamentarians are hashing out after last year's revolution that ousted Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali after 23 years of rule and inspired other "Arab Spring" uprisings.

"Sharia should be the principal source of legislation in the constitution. We reject any constitution that does not include Islam as the state religion," said Sandli Anwar, who held a sign reading "Islam is our religion, the Koran our constitution."

"Some people want to separate religion from government in Tunisia. We reject this."

While Islamists did not play a prominent role in the 2011 uprising, a struggle over the role of religion in politics has since polarised Tunisian politics.

Some Islamist MPs want Tunisia's new constitution to name sharia as a principal source of legislation. Secularists oppose such demands and worry that Islamists will seek to impose their views and ultimately undermine Tunisia's nascent democracy.

"People don't decide. God's rule decides. God bans adultery, corruption, alcohol yet places still sell alcohol, why?" said Zouheir Ashour from Kef. "We need to implement sharia... God rules not (President Moncef) Marzouki."

While the moderate Islamist Ennahda won October elections and now leads the government, it has chosen to rule in coalition with two secular parties and has promised not to ban alcohol or impose the veil as some secularists initially feared.

Ennahda did not participate in Friday's protest, organised by a coalition of religious organisations called the Islamic Front, which is devoted primarily to pushing for sharia.

While most Tunisians are Muslims, Tunisia has a long secular legacy, though one that has been tarnished by association with Ben Ali and his predecessor Habib Bourguiba, both dictators. Many Tunisian women shun the veil and defend legal rights in marriage and divorce that are among the region's most progressive.

Asked if she was concerned that sharia law would limit her freedoms, Marwa, a student who wore a niqab or face veil, said: "Nothing honours women like sharia... People moved away from religion under the old regime. People don't know any more."

Behind her, hundreds of women chanted: "Women want the implementation of sharia."

WIDENING DIVISIONS

Islamists were suppressed under Ben Ali, when men who grew beards or went to the mosque were closely watched. Women were discouraged from hiding their hair let alone their face.

Since the revolution, Salafi Islamists who follow a puritanical interpretation of Islam, have become more assertive.

Last year, Salafis protested outside Nessma TV when it aired the French-Iranian film Persepolis, angered by its animated depiction of God, which is banned in Islam. Salafis also attacked a cinema that was showing "Ni Dieu, Ni Maitre", or "No God, No Master" a film by secularist filmmaker Nadia al-Fani.

Asked what sharia law meant in practice, Mona al-Malki said: "We would not amputate a thief's hand. No, we would cut off the reasons he has to steal. We would not beat an adulterer, we would stop adultery. We cannot implement sharia to the letter."

Secular critics fear a gradual encroachment of ever stricter rules, however. They want Ennahda to rein in religious zealots.

One taxi driver, speeding away from the protest, said he had stopped taking passengers with beards or niqab as they kept demanding he turn off the music he plays on his radio.

"They want sharia? So they can amputate hands? Impossible," he said. "Now is not the time for sharia. Now is the time to think about the economy, about helping the unemployed and bringing back tourism to Tunisia."

Jesus Cortez: What About Undocumented "Youth" Who Have Aged Out of the DREAM Act?

As I reflect on the images of the undocumented "immigrant youth" who are promoted in the media when discussing DREAM Act-eligible persons -- or Dreamers, I wonder if they are talking about me. Even as I graduated with a double major in English and Chicana/o Studies from California State University, Fullerton, my age was always in the back of my mind. I wondered if I could still consider myself an "immigrant youth" at age 29.

Working has made me age faster. I have seen my face get more wrinkles with the day to day labor of mowing other people's lawns. At times, I find myself feeling weary of working in my brother's landscaping business while having two degrees put away inside a drawer. The experiences of dealing with a system that attempts to dehumanize me, turn me into an object, and labels me an "illegal" who is unworthy of even existing within the borders of the United States have taken its toll on me as well. The immigration system that creates a culture of silence among the undocumented has tried to break my spirit, but it has not.

After all, I navigated the school system, where I was lied to with the farce that we are all created equal under the Constitution. Meanwhile, anti-immigrant laws like Proposition 187 were promoted and passed by then California Governor Pete Wilson. From being told that it was disrespectful to speak Spanish in class, to being under surveillance too often for looking "suspicious," I managed to graduate from high school because my family had one expectation for me: to get a quality education and a better life, one that was not be readily available to me in my so-called homeland.

At the time of my high school graduation, undocumented students like my friends and I had to pay out-of-state tuition to attend college. So none of us did. On the day of my graduation, there was more pain than joy; especially after realizing I would start work the next day in my brother's landscaping business. All the while, my classmates made plans for trips to Europe in the summer or college in the fall.

It took me four years to finally start college (Assembly Bill 540 passed in 2001, allowing undocumented students in California who met certain criteria to pay in-state tuition); but by then, I was angrier and more critical of the society I had grown up in, and which I felt had rejected me. But I was eager to attend college, to learn and to take back a future that I felt had been stolen from me in 1998. As the years passed, I reevaluated what the whole point of my education had been, and why my family would bring me to a country that tells people that if they work hard that they will achieve their goals, that this is the land of opportunities, the land where anyone can make it. Clearly, those promises were never intended for me.

But it was only after becoming a part of undocumented student rights organizations during my time at community college and helping create another group at the university that I found my purpose. Focusing on the specific needs of undocumented students and creating a support network became as important to me as working on my bachelor's degree. I finally felt acceptance once I found that there was a group of people just like me, who had hopes and wanted to work towards change. At age 26, I had finally joined the movement for immigrants' rights, but given my experiences of rejection in high school and my violent upbringing in the streets of the city of Anaheim, I no longer felt like a "youth" by then.

By the time the Dream Act failed to pass the Senate in 2010, I had already aged out of the bill's protection by one year. Never did I think of not fighting for it though, it was not an option. I was reminded of all the youth whose faces were filled with hope at the idea of the Dream Act passing. Many had the same ideals as I did, and the Dream Act was not all we were fighting for, we were also challenging an immigration system that criminalizes our communities. This system has been doing just that since I first came to this country in 1989. And it is a system that is not broken, but rather works too well at dividing families, and deciding who is and who is not worthy of living within its borders.

So as I continue my journey through education, at 31, I am a not-so-young Dreamer. I am currently working on a Master's degree in Education and still mow lawns for people who probably have less college degrees than I do. I struggle to make tuition, and rely on friends who did not make it to college, and the youth in the movement to inspire me with their energy and creativity.

Though my eyes get tired and I get frustrated, I know that my experiences have made me strong enough to share my voice, my anger and frustrations, but also my love for those who struggle against injustices. When I arrived to this country, I was a child full of confusion and fear. Now, I am a man with experience and love. I am no longer afraid.

Senate Democrats recast startups bill as investor threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Democrats rebranded a bill aimed at job growth as a threat to investor protections on Thursday, proposing revisions that could halt one of Congress' few hopes for bi-partisan cooperation this year.

The House of Representatives last week overwhelmingly approved the bill to relax some regulations for smaller companies to allow them to more easily raise capital and offer public stock offerings. More capital means faster expansion for startups and more jobs, lawmakers reasoned.

But Democrats in the Senate sought to undo some of these provisions in the wake of warnings from Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro and other investor advocates that the House measure would erode investor protections and allow the return of some of the conditions that fueled the destructive tech stock bubble of the late 1990s.

Schapiro stepped up her criticism on Thursday, saying the House bill could chip away at firewalls that prevent investment bankers from rewarding analysts for favorable IPO research to lure unsuspecting investor clients. Schapiro, an independent, was appointed to the SEC by President Barack Obama.

"We should not walk backwards here," Schapiro said in a speech to a group of business journalists. "Collusive behavior between analysts and bankers cost investors huge sums, shattered confidence in the integrity of research, and damaged the markets themselves."

The Democratic revisions would address Schapiro's concerns about the firewalls, and they would also significantly limit the number of firms that could benefit from the measure's exemptions from certain costly disclosure, accounting, audit and other regulatory requirements.

The House bill had allowed fairly large companies - those with up to $1 billion in annual gross revenue - to qualify for certain key regulatory exemptions after their initial public offerings. Arguing that this would largely free the vast majority of IPO candidates from regulation, the Senate Democrats proposed lowering the threshold to $350 million.

This level would capture a greater share of true "startup" firms that need more help, said Senator Carl Levin.

"I think we should have all learned from the painful recent past that reducing investor protections against fraud and abuse will not help build a strong economy or create jobs," Levin said. "It will threaten our economy and lose us jobs."

PARTISAN BICKERING

The Democratic amendments quickly turned the bill from an election-friendly jobs measure seen winning quick approval to one that looked set to succumb to partisan bickering.

The amendments would need 60 votes to be adopted, but even if they fail, the Democrat-controlled Senate could kill the original House measure with a majority vote.

Republicans wasted no time accusing Democrats of trying to block the measure with parliamentary maneuvers, "partisan provisions" and "poison pills." Senator Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican, said Democrats wanted to kill the measure so President Barack Obama could continue his re-election campaign against a "do-nothing Congress."

"If Congress actually does something in a bipartisan way that helps many Americans. Well, it will undermine his narrative," Kyl said on the Senate floor. "He's relying on congressional dysfunction to keep that narrative going."

Senate Democrats on Thursday also attacked a provision in the House bill that would permit a new capital-raising strategy known as "crowdfunding," which lets investors take small stakes in private start-ups over the Internet.

While Democrats said they are not against the idea, they were concerned that Republicans had stripped away far too many regulations that would protect mom and pop investors from predators who seek to prey on people through the internet.

They are now seeking revisions, some of which were suggested by Schapiro, that include requiring intermediaries offering the stocks to register with the SEC and provide certain disclosures to investors.

Senate Democrats also proposed that the legislation extend the Export-Import Bank's lending authority until 2015 and increase its lending limit to $140 billion from $100 billion. The bank's charter is due to expire on May 31 and it is expected to hit the lending cap in a few weeks.

Some Republicans object to this because they believe the Eximbank is displacing private-sector lenders from big trade finance deals and that the taxpayer-subsidized financing it offers to foreign firms can actually hurt U.S. companies.
